Chapter 5: The law of umbrella

우산은 수천 년 전에 발명되었지만 인류가 머리를 맞대고 연구해도 더 좋은 디자인의 우산이 나오지 않는다. 임금이 행차할 때 궁녀가 드는 일산은 까마득한 옛날부터 쓰였다. 고구려 벽화에도 일산이 나온다. 우산이나 일산을 뜻하는 산傘이 글자가 우산처럼 생긴 것으로 봐서 이 글자가 생길 때부터 발명되어 있었던 것이다.

Umbrellas were invented thousands of years ago, but no matter how much humans study them, umbrellas with better designs come out. Ilsan, the umbrella that a court lady lifted while a king did a ceremonial walk, has been used for a long time. Goguryeo murals also show Ilsan. Chinese characters 傘, which means umbrella or Ilsan, is similar to umbrellas in form. You can see that there was already an umbrella when this letter was created.

칼날은 뾰족해야 한다. 컴퓨터 게임에 나오는 복잡한 디자인의 멋진 칼은 실전에서 쓸모가 없다. 무게중심이 맞지 않기 때문이다. 칼날을 부딪히면 손목에 충격이 집중되어 칼을 떨어뜨리게 된다. 중국집에서 쓰는 넓적한 식도는 무거워 보이지만 칼질을 하루종일 해도 팔이 아프지 않다. 손목 힘으로 내리누르는게 아니라 칼 자체의 힘으로 탄력을 이용하여 자르기 때문이다. 한국식 식도로 중국요리 하듯이 칼을 많이 쓰면 손목이 아프다. 물리적인 이유로 디자인은 복잡해질 수 없다.

The blade should be sharp. The fancy knife with a complex design in the computer game is useless in practice. Because the center of gravity becomes off center. When the blade hits, the impact is concentrated on the wrist and the sword is dropped. The meat cleaver used in Chinese restaurants looks heavy, but even if you cut it all day, your arms don't hurt. This is because it is cut using the weight of the knife itself, not by pressing it with the strength of the wrist. It hurts your wrist if you use korean kitchen knife as if you were cooking Chinese food. The design cannot be complicated for physical reasons.

더 멋진 젓가락 디자인도 없다. 모든 숟가락은 디자인이 같다. 연필도 마찬가지다. 디자인을 다르게 해봤자 꼭지에 지우개나 달아본게 고작이다. 그것도 오래 가지 못했다. 어떤 둘이 맞물리는 접점에서는 구조가 단순화 된다. 그 단순함이 넘을 수 없는 장벽이 된다. 인류가 색다른 외계인을 디자인하지 못하는 것도 그렇다. 외계인은 하나같이 못생겼다. 이유가 뭘까? 외계인은 지구까지 찾아올 정도로 뛰어나다. 뛰어나려면 단순해야 한다. 괴물처럼 팔이 네 개나 되고 눈이 열 개나 되는 복잡한 생김새의 외계인은 진화하지 못한 종이다. 진화했다면 단순한데 단순한 것은 그리기 어렵다. 넘을 수 없는 장벽이 된다. 지구는 용케 그 장벽을 넘었기에 생명을 품었고 인류도 용케 그 장벽을 넘었기에 문명을 품었는데 외계인은 그 장벽을 넘지 못해서 아직 지구에 도착하지 못하고 있는 것이다.

There is no better chopstick design either. All spoons have the same design. The same goes for pencils. Even if I change the design, the only thing I can do is adding an eraser to the top. But it doesn’t last long either. At the point of contact between some two, the form of structure is most simple. Its simplicity cannot overcome even any other complexity. It is also true that mankind can't design a different alien. Aliens are all ugly. You know the reason? Aliens are always outstanding enough as they come to Earth. And it means that simplicity is excellence. Aliens with four arms and ten eyes like monsters are a species that has not evolved. If it has evolved, it is simple, but it is difficult to copy the simplicity. It becomes an insurmountable barrier. The Earth had life after crossing the barrier, and mankind also had civilization by the same reason. Aliens have not yet arrived on Earth because they have not crossed the barrier.

세상은 뚫을 수 없는 천장이 있고 넘어갈 수 없는 문턱이 있다. 거기서 다수는 걸러진다. 피할 수 없는 접점의 문제다. 구조론으로 보면 어떤 둘이 맞물리는 접점은 벌거벗어야 한다. 겉으로 노출되어야 한다. 섬세해야 한다. 귀는 소리를 모으는 형태라야 한다. 디자인이 정해져 있는 것이다. 우산은 비와 접촉하고, 젓가락은 손가락과 접촉한다. 접촉의 문제 때문에 거기서 걸러진다. 접촉하기 쉬운 형태라야 한다. 뛰어난 것은 단순해야 한다. 뛰어나면서도 단순한 것은 형태의 종류가 많지 않다.

The world has an impenetrable ceiling and a threshold that cannot be crossed. Most of competitors are filtered out there. It is a matter of inevitable point of contact. In Gujoron, the point of contact between the two should be the primitive form. It has to be completely exposed on the outside. I have to be delicate and precise. Ears should be a form of collecting sounds. That's why the design has already been decided. Umbrellas come in contact with rain, chopsticks come in contact with fingers. All unnecessary elements are filtered out due to the difficulty of contact. It should be in a form that is easy to contact. So something outstanding has to be simple. There are not many types of forms that are outstanding but simple.

단순함이라는 장벽이야말로 인류가 넘을 수 없는 절대적인 한계다. 예술작품이 미니멀리즘을 추구하는 것도 같다. 넘을 수 없는 장벽을 설치하여 아류와 차별화 하는 것이다. 구조가 단순하면 모방한 사실이 쉽게 드러나므로 표절할 수 없다. 스티브 잡스가 전매특허로 쓰는 전략이다.

The barrier of simplicity is an absolute limit that mankind cannot overcome. It is the same reason why works of art pursue minimalism. It is to block fakes by building barriers that cannot be overcome. If the structure is simple, the fake is easily revealed, so it cannot be copied. It is a strategy that Steve Jobs uses as a monopoly patent.
