Chapter1: The final story

독재자가 베란다에서 몰려든 군중들을 향해 즉흥연설을 한다. 앞에서 보면 양복 입고 나비 넥타이 잡순 멋쟁이지만 뒤에서 보면 자다가 불려나나서 궁뎅이를 내놓고 있다. 인간들 꼬라지가 대략 그렇다. 슬픈 것은 제대로 된 진짜 인간이 지구에 한 명도 없다는 거다. 예전에는 그렇지 않았던듯 한데 말이다. 영웅들의 세기였던 20세기는 가고 21세기가 되자 인간들이 초라해졌다. 아는척 하는 사람은 많은데 되먹은 사람이 없다.

진중권이 좀 아는 사람인데 전형적인 궁뎅이다. 앞에서 안티조선 하고 뒤로는 조선일보 기자에게 술 얻어먹고 다녔다. 그게 20년 전의 일. 강준만도 앞으로는 선각자였는데 뒤로는 안철수 꼬붕짓 하고 다녔다. 황교익이 한 때는 관찮은 사람으로 통했는데, 기어코 대중을 이겨먹으려는 소인배 행동을 멈추지 못하고 있다. 그의 페북글은 억울해 죽겠다며 엄마한테 일러바치는 일곱살 꼬맹이의 징징대는 말투다. 어휴~! 굴밤을 500대 먹여줄 수도 없고. 손혜원, 금태섭, 안민석, 정봉주, 정청래, 박용진들 중에 괜찮은 신사는 없다. 시정잡배와 다르다고 말하기 어렵다.

김어준이야 워낙 캐릭터가 그래서 그렇다 치고. 박주민이 괜찮은 사람이긴 한데 말을 너무 아낀다. 솔직히 우리 쪽에 인재가 없다. 믿을만한 사람이 없다. 기생충 서민처럼 재치와 입담으로 무장하고 멋지게 데뷔하지만 십리도 못 가서 변절하고 만다. 정철승 변호사가 페이스북에 말은 잘하더라. 엊그제 조동연 까는 것을 보면 하루를 못 참나 싶다. 도대체 입방정도 유분수지 고작 하루를 못 참는단 말인가? 유창선이야 원래 타고난 쓰레기고. 이런 판국에 대중의 지식인에 대한 불신은 당연하다. 대중을 탓하는건 허무하고 지식인이 잘해야 한다. 솔직히 노무현 이후로 사람 하나가 없었다. 문재인은 정치중립 지키느라 그런지 말을 너무 아낀다. 지도자는 말을 해야 한다. 정치검사판이 된 것과 언론신뢰도 꼴찌는 사과해야 한다. 사과는 잘못해서 하는 게 아니다. 차기 대통령에게 길을 열어주는 것이다. 문재인은 제 발로 나온 사람이 아니라 끌려나온 사람이라 그렇다지만.

정치인 중에 사람이 없을 뿐 아니라 과학자 중에도 사람이 없다. 존재의 본질에 대해서 용감하게 말하는 사람은 없다. 냉소하거나 회의하고 이죽거리는 것은 누구나 할 수 있다. 종교를 비판하는 학자는 더러 있더라만 인간의 종교적 본능은 비판한다고 해결되는 문제가 아니다. 학자는 비판만 하면 된다는 식의 옹졸한 태도가 문제다. 공자는 뒤에서 비판이나 하고 나자빠져 있지 않았다. 뉴턴도 종교에 매몰되었고 아인슈타인도 정적우주론 타령 하며 자신의 상대성이론을 부정하려 들었다. 지가 저질러놓고 너무 나갔나 싶어 수습하려고 눈치를 본 거다. 천하인의 기개가 없다.

Not only politicians, but scientists have no reliable one. There is no one who speaks with conviction about the nature of existence. Even a fool can do anything cynical, skeptical, or sarcastic. Some scholars criticize religion, but religious instincts are not a problem that can be solved by criticizing it. The problem is the attitude that the duty of scholars is only to criticize. Confucius didn’t hide behind, but criticized confidently in front of the public. Newton was also swept away by religion, and Einstein tried to deny his theory of relativity, asserting for Steady State theory. When the aftermath of his theory grew so large, he tried to patch it up. There is no spirit of defeating the world.

사람이 많은데 사람이 그립다. 아무도 말하지 않으면 나라도 말해야 한다. 나는 도덕군자를 경멸했다. 모험심 없는 사람이다. 틀에 갇히는 사람이다. 멋쟁이는 '희랍인 조르바'처럼 유쾌, 상쾌, 통쾌해야 한다. 그게 철 없는 소년의 생각이라는 사실을 알았다. 선장을 믿고, 노무현을 믿고, 지식인을 믿고, 교수를 믿고, 과학자를 믿었기 때문에 그랬던 거다. 세상에는 나보다 잘난 지성인이 밤하늘의 별처럼 많을 것이다. 그들을 믿고 우린 천진난만하면 되는 거다. 엄마를 믿는 아이처럼 활력을 보여주고 풍성함을 추구하면 되는 것이었다. 옳고 그름을 따지는건 답답한 짓이다. 용기와 배짱과 활력과 모험과 활발한 상호작용 속에서 다 용해된다. 지식인 특유의 이래라 저래라 잔소리 짜증난다. 발랄하면 되고 귀여우면 되고 생동감 넘치면 된다. 문제가 있겠지만 통과의례고 신고식이다. 상호작용 속에 저절로 해소된다. 그렇게 생각한게 2000년대 초까지 나의 사고방식이었다. 노무현은 살해되었다. 선장이 없고, 지식인이 없고, 엘리트가 없고, 아는 사람이 없고, 과학자가 없고, 교수는 또라이고, 검사는 미쳤고, 기레기는 인간이 아니고 진중권은 소인배고, 서민은 변절했고 김어준은 대책이 없고.

There are many people, but I miss a human being. No one is talking, so I’ll say it. I despised a moral gentleman. Because he isn’t adventurous, and he's stuck in a rut. A stylish person should be pleasant, refreshing, and thrilling like ‘Zorba the Greek’. So I trusted Noh Moo-hyun, trusted intellectuals, trusted professors, and trusted scientists. There are many intelligent people who are better than me like stars in the night sky. So all I have to do is to trust them and be innocent like children. It was enough to pursue vitality and abundance like a child following a mother. It is foolish to distinguish between right and wrong. It dissolves in courage, guts, vitality, adventure, and active interaction. The intellectual's timid nagging is just annoying. All I had to do is be cheerful, cute, and lively. There may be a problem, but it is only a rite of passage and a hazing. This was my way of thinking until the early 2000s. But I found out later that it was the thought of an immature boy. Noh Moo-hyun was murdered. There is no captain, there is no leader, no intellectuals, no professor, no scientists. The prosecutor is crazy, the trash reporter is a pseudo-human being, Jin Joong-kwon is a petty man, Seo-min have betrayed, and Kim Eo-jun has no countermeasures.

꼰대가 제일 싫었는데 내가 꼰대가 되어가는 중이다. 병아리를 지키는 엄마닭처럼 신경이 곤두서 있다. 유쾌하고, 상쾌하고, 근사하고, 세련되고, 매력있고, 발랄하고, 쿨하고, 시크하고, 고상하고 지적인 자세를 견지하는 것이 나의 교리였고 십계명이었는데 이젠 옛날 이야기가 되었다. 세월이 흐르고 보니 그게 엄마를 믿고 함부로 까부는 어린애 행동이었다. 그때가 좋은 시절이었다. 씨바 이 문명은 애초에 엄마가 없고, 어른이 없고, 가장이 없고, 선장이 없고 스승이 없다. 오죽하면 트럼프 같은 또라이가 나대겠느냐고. 철학자는 미이라가 되었다. 현자는 토굴에 숨어서 나오지 못한다. 빈정거리고, 조롱하고, 냉소하고, 회의하고, 의심하는 학자는 있는데 그들은 뒤에서 움직인다.

I hated kkondae(a preach person) the most, but I am becoming kkondae. I'm nervous like a mother chicken guarding a chick. I’d like to maintain a pleasant, refreshing, cool, sophisticated, charming, cheerful, smart, elegant and intellectual manner. It was my doctrine and the Ten Commandments, but now it has become an old fashioned. Years later, I realized that it was an immature behaviour like a child putting his mom in front of him. That was a good time. This civilization had no mother, no adult, no breadwinner, no captain and no teacher from the beginning. How could a lunatic like Trump be on the stage? The philosopher became a mummy. The wise man can't come out hiding in a cave. There are scholars who are sarcastic, mock, cynical, skeptical and suspicious, and they move in hiding behind.

골목에는 아기울음 소리가 사라지고 지구촌에는 낙관주의가 사라졌다. 이 문명은 어찌 이리도 비참하다는 말인가? 박원순, 안희정, 김경수, 조국은 어디로 갔을까? 그들은 가라앉았다. 임종석, 우상호, 이인영, 송영길, 임수정은 심부름이나 할 동네 애들이다. 우상은 죽었고 우상 비슷한 것도 없다. 우상은 커녕 잡상도 없다. 쌈빡한 개인들의 시대는 저물고 이제는 못나서 팀플레이라도 해야 하는 시대다. 앞에서 이끌어가지 못하면 뒤에서 밀어보기라도 해야 한다. 노무현을 잃고 우울해졌다. 돌이켜보니 그때 그시절의 유쾌 상쾌 통쾌가 다 노무현의 후광이었다. 한국인들은 고아가 되었다. 선장 없는 배를 깡패가 장악했다.
